Bar and Block review

On a busy, city slicking Friday night in Birmingham City Centre, I took the opportunity to visit a fairly new edition to Birmingham’s thriving food scene – Bar and Block. Located just off Colmore row on Waterloo St, Bar and Block is perfectly located for young professionals leaving work looking for a decent bite to eat with a nice cool one. Being a Friday night the place was fairly busy at the bar but not jam packed which is always a good thing. We were greeted extremely quickly and shown straight away to a 4 seater table.

I wouldn’t say it’s the most intimate or discreet restaurant, but they are not aiming to be. Their mission is obvious – provide top notch food, a range of quality drinks in a hip and modern fashion and this pays off dividends.

So to the food, for starters we ordered the Ploughman’s Block  at £10.95 which included a mouthwater amount of food: Homemade Scotch egg, sausage roll, Cheddar cheese, thinly sliced salt beef, a wedge of pork pie, marinated dill pickles, chargrilled red peppers, piccalilli and crusty bread. More than enough for two and had the best scotch egg I’ve ever tasted… Kudos.

On to the main, I opted for Fillet 8oz whilst my partner went for the 10oz Sirloin. Both came perfectly cooked and with a generous amount of chunky chips. With a lot of competition of steak houses in Birmingham and one of my favourites being Fiesta Del Asado, I can honestly say that this is one of the better steaks I’ve tasted in Brum and if having the choice to go back again or go to one of my old regulars, I would opt to re-visit Bar and Block. Top quality steak.

After becoming very full we decided to share a desert to finish off this full review. A chocolate brownie and ice cream. Wasn’t of the best quality and most places tend to not quite get it right with deserts which is why I usually pass. Wasn’t particularly bad but just didn’t amaze me as much as the rest of the meal did.

The bill with 2 cocktails each came to a cool £92 which was fair for 2 sharing courses, a main of steaks each and the 4 cocktails! Service was fantastic and very friendly throughout and seems like everyone else leaving had also enjoyed the same great experience we did.

Will certainly be going back to enjoy some drinks after work and I’m sure I’ll be eating some tasty steak again too. Thumbs up from FB.
